DAP’S TUNKU AZIZ AGAINST BERSIH 3.0

VETERAN DAP leader, Senator Tunku Abdul Aziz appeared today to break ranks with his party leadership over its backing of Bersih 3.0 this Saturday, claiming the event encourages Malaysians to 'break the law'.
Tunku Abdul Aziz makes a point why he is against the Bersih 3.0 rally to reporters in Kuala Lumpur
My opposition to this kind of demonstration is- we are encouraging people to break the law and we are supposed to be lawmakers. I think there is a contradiction here,” he said. “I am in favour of us assembling if that is not breaking the law but breaking the law is something that I cannot support.” The DAP vice-chairman, who is among the few Malays in the Chinese-dominated party, had declared his stand this afternoon at the Dewan Negara sitting here during the ongoing debate on the royal address.

Speaking to reporters at the Parliament lobby later, Tunku noted that this was his personal stand on the issue, which he has conveyed to his colleagues in the DAP leadership. “Well, I’ve told them that I am opposed [to Bersih 3.0]. “I am opposed to this on a personal basis as a matter of personal principle.... what the party wants to do, that’s the party’s decision,” he said. The senior leader noted that although most street demonstrations start off with peaceful intentions, they often turn out to be violent and chaotic. “Now, when something happens, who is going to take responsibility?

The person or the people who organise it will probably not be there. Who will be looking after the casualties, people who are injured, people who are trampled upon? “The tendency is to blame the authorities and I think this is not fair,” he said. Tunku Abdul Aziz labelled election watchdog Bersih “irresponsible” for refusing to budge from its plan to use Dataran Merdeka for the “sit-in” protest, pointing out that the authorities have already offered alternative venues.

The whole idea is to protest. Does it matter where the protesting is done?” he pointed out. But he also stressed that he was in full support of an individual’s constitutional right to assembly, provided that this right is exercised within the confines of the law. He said the police were a legally established authority and Bersih 3.0’s organisers should accept their advice on the suitable venue for the event. “The law provides for us to assemble but what I am saying is — who is responsible for security in our country? The police. “Whatever we do, we have to consult the police. If they advise us; maybe you have to change your route, maybe you should do it somewhere else, that’s what we should do, because to go against the police... they are an established legal authority,” he said.

Asked for alternative ways for Bersih to air its grouses over the country’s failure to reform the polls process, Tunku Abdul Aziz said: “There must be other ways without getting on the streets.” He pointed out that those who oppose to the country’s laws could use Parliament as their avenue to amend the legislation instead of taking to the streets in a show of force. “We may be part of any party or organisation but that does not mean we abandon our conscience.

All of us should never do that. Some things we support, other things we must oppose,” he said. Bersih has clashed with the authorities on its plan to use Dataran Merdeka for its rally this Saturday. Both the Home Ministry and KL City Hall have offered alternative venues, including Stadium Merdeka, which was Bersih’s choice of venue last year, but the election watchdog has rejected the suggestion, saying it had come at too short a notice.

Bersih 3.0 rally in Kuala Lumpur

Visitors to Kuala Lumpur on 28th April 2012 should be aware that the city is bracing itself for what could be one of the largest political demonstrations in its history. A massive sit-down protest is planned at Merdeka Square (Dataran Merdeka) on Saturday the 28th, from 14:00 to 16:00, to call for free and fair elections in Malaysia.
Dataran Merdeka
It is the third mass rally called by a coalition of NGOs known as Bersih ("clean" in Malay) over recent years, pushing for an end to an electoral system riddled with serious irregularities. Bersih has eight key demands: clean up the electoral roll; reform the postal ballot; use indelible ink for voters; a minimum 21-day campaign period; free and fair access to media; strengthen public institutions; stop corruption; and stop dirty politics. The last mass protest, Bersih 2.0 in July 2011, saw a heavy-handed response from the authorities, with the police using baton charges, water cannons and tear gas. Dozens of people were injured, and about 1,600 arrested.
Yellow, the colour of protest.
Yellow is the color of the day.
Since then, the government has promised changes to the laws on peaceful assembly, and umpteen small protests have passed off peacefully. The police even adopted a softly-softly approach towards the thousands of supporters of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who gathered in early January to hear the verdict in the latest court case against him.
Mobbed by supporters.
Anwar acquitted
Anwar was acquitted, much to the delight of the crowd, but the celebrations were cut short by three small bomb blasts in quick succession. Five people were injured in the explosions, none seriously. It is a warning that attending a political rally in Malaysia does come with risks, even if the police are not being confrontational.
No smoke without bomb blast.
Bomb blast
Whether the government will adopt the same heavy-handed tactics with Bersih 3.0 as with its predecessor is anyone's guess. But an early indication is that the protest was declared illegal within hours of it being announced. The main worry for visitors, apart from being baton charged/tear gassed/water cannoned/arrested, is that KL will face a similar "shutdown" to last July, when major road and rail links were blocked by the police.
Do they predict a riot?
Another major shutdown of KL?
Adding extra spice to this rally is the knowledge that the next general election, or GE13 as it is known in this acronym-loving country, is just months away. With free and fair polls, Malaysia could well see its first democratic change of government since independence in 1957. But after more than five decades in power, the ruling UMNO and its coalition partners are in no mood to abandon an electoral system which has served them so well. As the saying goes, turkeys don't vote for Christmas.

Malaysian man survives with half a skull

Children would often cry when they see him, but Mohd Izanuddin Hisham Muhamad, 24, is used to it.

The resident of Kampung Kubang Panjang in Kelantan, Malaysia, looks like an "alien", as some people have nicknamed him.

But despite missing half his skull, he is full of hope and his appearance has not dented his spirit.

The oldest of three children described the accident three years ago. He said it happened one Friday afternoon. He was riding his motorcycle home from work.

"A Honda Jazz driven by a Thai national tried to overtake another vehicle. He didn't succeed and ended up hitting my motorcycle.

"I flew like Superman for a distance of 2m and crashed into a large tree by the roadside. My helmet broke into two.

"I ended up being in a coma... for three months." When he woke up in hospital, he said he felt his head and was shocked to find a huge dent.

He added: "I asked my mother, who was by my bed, for a mirror and I nearly 'lost my head' when I saw that my once-perfect head was deformed."

His mother, Shamsiah Yatim, 57, and his father,Muhamad Mohd Noor, 52, helped calm him down. And he eventually accepted his fate.

Besides his missing skull, Hisham now has a squint in his left eye but his vision has not been affected.

He said that the first day he was home from hospital, he panicked when a neighbour's child cried in fear when he saw his head.

He said his parents, who are labourers, are now struggling to pay for his medical treatment, which cost RM8,000 to RM12,000, excluding medication.

4 hurt in Subang Empire Shopping Gallery explosion

Today we were shocked with another explosion in shopping mall. On December 14, 2009, a gas installation worker was killed and 19 others were injured, including three seriously, in an explosion believed to be caused by liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) leakage during testing at the Aeon Jusco shopping complex at Jalan Tun Razak-Peringgit.
Jusco Melaka explosion site
Today, 28th October 2011, four people were injured while more than 300 were rescued and evacuated after a suspected gas leak caused an explosion on the lower ground floor of the Empire Shopping Gallery.

Below is the article from The Sun about this incident:

"PETALING JAYA (Sept 28, 2011): A massive explosion triggered by a leaking gas line ripped more than 40 shops at the Empire Gallery shopping mall in Subang Jaya, injuring four people and causing extensive damage to the building early today.
Bystanders and passing pedestrians scurried to safety on seeing the glass shards and wooden panels from the facade of the mall being blown out by the impact of the explosion which occurred at about 3.45am.
About 300 hotel guests of the Empire Tower Hotel, adjoining the shopping mall, were rudely awakened by the blast.
Dozens of police personnel and firemen who arrived the scene within minutes after receiving a distress call evacuated the hotel guests and kept members of the public at a safe distance from the mall.
"I thought I died when the blast threw my girlfriend and me off my feet. I had to carry my girlfriend to safety as she had injured her leg." said Daryl Chua, 27, who suffered bruises from flying glass shards.
Chua and his 23-year-old girlfriend Hibbie Tan, who were among the four people injured, were walking towards an automated parking machine to pay for their tickets when the explosion took place. They were later taken to the University Malaya Medical Centre in an ambulance for treatment.
WTF 5035...this owner really gonna say WTF!
They had gone to the mall in separate cars for supper at an eatery in the mall earlier.
Their vehicles which were parked opposite a Starbucks outlet on the ground floor was slightly damaged by debris.
Soon after the incident, police sealed the building for safety reason and it was off limits to members of the public and also shop owners.
Shattered glass all around.
Subang Jaya police chief ACP Zainal Rashid said two Nepali security guards on duty at the mall were the other two victims who suffered minor injuries.
He said witnesses told police that they heard a single explosion which shook the ground.
"Forensics teams from the police and Fire and Rescue Department are investigating the cause of the explosion.

"For now, we only know that it is possibly a leaking gas pipeline at the basement floor that caused it. We are checking if there are elements of sabotage. We have also checked the affected areas for others who may be trapped but found none," he said.
Fire and Rescue Department assistant director and head of operations Mohd Shahril Sharul said the first batch of firemen who arrived the scene within five minutes managed to rescue the Nepali guards who were trapped in the lower ground floor.
He said there were only small fires scattered along the building which were quickly put out by firemen, adding that 10 sniffer dogs from his department's K9 unit were also despatched to assist in the probe.
The cost of damage has not been determined.
Police and the Fire and Rescue Department have identified the gas leak in a restaurant located on the lower ground floor of the mall as the cause of the explosion. However, they are still investigating the cause of the gas leak.
The shopping mall has a centralised gas pipe line that ran across 21 business lots.

Meanwhile, Datuk Danny Cheah, the group executive director of Mammoth Empire Group of Companies, which owns the Empire Gallery, said the shopping mall will be closed for an indefinite period for repairs and investigations. Jalan SS16/1 will also be closed.
In a statement, the management of Empire Shopping Gallery said it will be focusing on the well being of its partners and guests.
All guests staying at the Empire Hotel and Soho were evacuated and measures were taken to ensure their safety and comfort.
All operations at the Empire Shopping Gallery has been halted following advice from the emergency response team, it said."

This prove that Malaysia shopping center is not so safe after all...

Fernandes promises to turn QPR into a diamond after finalising takeover deal

Tony Fernandes has completed his takeover of Queens Park Rangers.
The Air Asia tycoon now has a 66 per cent stake, buying his shares from Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatore.
Lakshmi Mittal will retain his 33 per cent stake in the Premier League club.
Thumbs up: Tony Fernandes now has a majority share in QPR

Fernandes said: 'I lived in Uxbridge Road for many years and grew up around the area.
'Everyone knows I’ve followed West Ham all my life, but I’ve always had a soft spot for QPR.

'Rangers were one of the first teams I watched as a child at Loftus Road.
'The opportunity to get involved with the Club was mentioned to me by the previous owners and here I am.
'I’ve always wanted to be involved in football and the appeal of a London Club, like QPR, was too good an opportunity to turn down.
'It’s funny how life has a way of spinning things round. It goes full circle sometimes.
'QPR is a raw diamond and hopefully I can contribute into turning it into a diamond.'
Bernie Ecclestone  and Flavio Briatore have sold their stakes

Fernandes added: 'I have ambitions in the long term.
'I could easily say we’re going to win the Champions League and the Premier League, but that’s really not my style. I don’t want to make big promises I can’t guarantee.
'I want the fans to be proud of what we’re doing and be involved as much as we can.
Tony Fernandes

The fans pay good money and are stakeholders, so whatever we do, I want the fans to be proud. We’ll do it in style and with integrity.
'I’m keen to create a good Academy, so that there’s a constant supply of players. We’re in a fantastic part of London and we should be bringing kids through.
'The third aspect is to be a strong partner in the community and to make a difference in the community.

'Of course you don’t go into anything in the sporting world and not want to be the best, but these things take time and I’d rather let the results speaks for themselves.'
Amit Bhatia, who will resume his position as Vice Chairman of the Club, said: 'I'm very excited to welcome Tony to QPR and having spent considerable time with him, know that we share the same vision and values.
'We have discussed in great detail how to restore pride at the Club and I'm very pleased with the outcome of these discussions.
Boost: Neil Warnock is set to be given funds to keep QPR in the Premier League
Neil Warnock will be given fund to boost the squad

'It was a very difficult decision to resign from the board when I did, so I'm thrilled to be back and would like to thank all those who supported me and my family and look forward to serving the Club to the best of my abilities again.
'Tony and I will work alongside each other to try and make this season as exciting and successful as possible. I love this Club and this is a very happy day for me.'

The deceased, identified as Mamadou Aliou Tela Diallo from Guinea, West Africa, was found dead in his hostel room at UIA in Gombak Monday.

His room-mate found the 25-year-old on the floor when he returned from a field assignment at about 12.20pm.

Gombak police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rahim Abdullah said there were traces of blood around the body but no indication of a struggle.

He said initial investigations revealed that Mamadou could have died about a week ago.

He said the victim's room-mate, who wished to be known only as Sharif, said Mamadou had epilepsy and often sought treatment at the university's clinic and hospital.

The body was sent to the Selayang Hospital.

Most expensive cities in the world - cost of living

The city with the highest cost of living in the world is not New York or Tokyo, but Luanda, Angola.

(scroll down for the top50 table)
Angola's capital Luanda retained the unenviable title of the world's most expensive city for expatriates, narrowly edging out Tokyo, according to a survey published by Mercer Human Resource Consulting.

At the other end of the scale, the Mercer group's study named the Pakistani port Karachi as the least expensive city.

Oil-rich Angola is a magnet for foreign workers who push up already high prices inflated by a reliance on imports.

The southern African nation's domestic production lags behind its neighbours due to the effects of a 27-year-long civil war on its infrastructure.

Another African city, the Chadian capital N'Djamena, was placed third with Moscow fourth and Geneva fifth.

Paris dropped 10 places to 27th while London dropped one place to 18th. New York at 32nd was named as the most expensive metropolis in the United States.

Australian cities jumped sharply in the ranking, reflecting the local currency's 14 percent gain against the US dollar.

The report, which is published annually to help companies assess compensation allowances for expatriate workers, compared the cost of over 200 items including housing, food and transport in 214 cities, using New York as a reference.

Kuala Lumpur also gone up in the ranking because the US dollar has weakened against Ringgit Malaysia.
