Samsung Galaxy S3 vs LG Nexus 4

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is 2012’s best-selling smartphone, but the LG Nexus 4 could scupper its reign. Despite its ridiculously low price tag, the Nexus 4 does have some downsides that must be mentioned before we decide if it’s to be the next big Android thing. So let’s take a look at both devices.
LG Nexus 4 vs Samsung Galaxy S3
Design: These are great phones. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is bigger and thinner, whereas the LG Nexus 4 is glass on the front and back, and shows a faint glitter in the light. It’s 0.36”x2.70”x5.27” compared to the S3’s 0.34”x2.78”x5.38”. The LG Nexus 4 is 139g to the S3’s 133g, so they’re both light phones. However the LG Nexus 4 looks more premium than the Samsung Galaxy S3 thanks to its glass rear and overall exterior build quality, so wins by a narrow margin.
Nexus 4
Screens: The LG Nexus 4 has a 4.7”, 1,280x768p, 318ppi display. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 4.8”, 1,280x720p, 306ppi screen. Some people prefer the S3’s Super AMOLED display, but some dislike its oversaturated colours; and the LG Nexus 4 does way better in bright light. The Nexus 4’s realistic colours are good, but might look a bit weak compared to the S3’s vibrant display. Personally, I’ll always choose life-like over hyper-real.
Software: the LG Nexus 4 is the pure Android 4.2 user experience, so there’s loads of new features, and a Swype-like keyboard. It also has PhotoSphere, which gives 360 degree composite images. The LG Nexus 4 is in the lead, as it’ll also get updates faster and more frequently than the Samsung Galaxy S3 ever can.
Connectivity: The LG Nexus 4 lacks LTE, using HSPA+ instead. HSPA+ promises speeds of up to 42MBPS, but AT&T (which uses HSPA+ and LTE) tests showed that LTE is faster. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has LTE, and, considering that this is thought to be the future of data, it wins here.
Chips: The US version of the Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 chip with 2GB of RAM, and the international version has a 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos processor with 1GB of RAM. The LG Nexus 4 has the best of both worlds, with four cores and 2GB of RAM in the same body.
Galaxy S3
Storage: The LG Nexus 4 doesn’t have expandable storage, and only has 8 or 16GB versions. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes in 16, 32 and 64GB versions and takes another 64GB on SD, so it wins.
Cameras: Both phones have 8MP cameras, but the Samsung Galaxy S3 leads with a 1.9MP front camera, which beats the Nexus 4 1.4MP offering.
Battery: Both phones have 2,100mAh batteries, giving the same amount of talktime, so it’s a draw.
To sum up, The LG Nexus 4 is the best Nexus yet, but it’s let down by its lack of LTE. So simply put, if LTE is a big deal for you, then opt for the Samsung Galaxy S3. If you’re not too bothered about LTE or the 16GB storage limit then go for the cooler design, more reliable updates and a faster chip with the LG Nexus 4.
